The Superintendent’s High School Art Show

High school students from all nine Educational Service Districts (ESDs) have been participating in the ESD Regional Arts Shows. Finalists from the regional shows are moving forward to the state show that will be on display at OSPI on April 1–May 30, with a reception and awards ceremony taking place on Friday, May 17, from 1–3 p.m. at OSPI. The Arts and Dropout Prevention: The Power of Art to Engage

This National Dropout Prevention Center/Network White Paper, which was published in October 2017, provides a look at the value of arts education being considered more intentionally as a dropout prevention strategy. Visual Arts Matter

This newly released resource explores how visual arts support students’ academic success both within and outside of school settings by cultivating learning skills, boosting academic achievement and enhancing the educational experience of traditionally underserved students. The Arts and Title IV Funding

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) contains specific language that allows school districts to utilize Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants (Title IV, Part A) for programs and activities that support student access to a well-rounded education. School districts may use Title IV, Part A funds to implement or expand programs and activities that use the arts as tools to support student success through the promotion of constructive student engagement, problem solving, and conflict resolution. National Association for Music Education (NAfME) – Student Composers Competition

NAfME is seeking original music written by student composers for featured performances in the 2019 Young Composers Concert and the 2019 All-National Honors Choir performance as part of the NAfME National Conference in November in Orlando, Florida. Western Governors High School Art Competition

The Western Governors’ Association is proud to announce, “Celebrate the West,” a regional art competition that challenges high school students to create works inspired by their state. The deadline for submissions is April 28, 2019. Music Matters – Grants Available

Music Matters grants are now open for 2019-2020 to support music education in your school! Priority will be given to schools where funding for music programs is a challenge. Congressional District #1 — High School Art Competition

The Congressional Art Competition is open to all high school students in the 1st District. The over-all winner of our district’s competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. Centrum, located in Port Townsend and in partnership with OSPI, gathers young artists, scientists and teachers together. Artists working in the fields of visual art, writing, theater, movement, and music will provide young artists opportunities to learn new ways of thinking, seeing, and being. 2019 NAfME Electronic Music Composition Competition

The NAfME Electronic Music Composition Competition recognizes outstanding compositions and highlights the effectiveness of music technology in the school curriculum. Entries will be judged based on their aesthetic quality, use of electronic media, and the power of the composition. Application deadline is April 19. Take the CTE “Get Real” Video Challenge

Art How 2’s 2019: Designing Collaborative Creative Learning Experiences

In this workshop participants will learn how to facilitate the design thinking process by using their own curriculum to frame their lessons, make connections to other content areas, and acquire techniques for guiding students toward developing the necessary mindset and skills to thrive in today’s world. These 5th Avenue Theatre workshops give high school students, with an interest in musical theater, the opportunity to create the characters, sing the songs, learn the choreography, and meet with the production cast and crew. Summer Dance Institute for Teachers (SDIT)

Join Anne Green Gilbert and colleagues as they share the philosophy of brain-compatible teaching and the power of the BrainDance. Participants will experience lessons based on Anne Green Gilbert’s patently successful five-part conceptual lesson plan and the brain-compatible principles that underpin it. Seattle Theatre Group’s (STG) Songwriters Lab
