Social Studies are crucial to the development of learning about different world views, cultures and peoples. A robust social studies experience encourages critical thinking skills, civic engagement and provides a framework for the history of our world. Social Studies Learning Standards describe what students should know and be able to do in civics, economics, geography, history, and skills for effective participation in public life.
The Archdiocesan Social Studies Scope & Sequence was developed to assist schools and teachers plan units of study and align their programs to the C3 Social Studies Framework, the OSPI Social Studies Grade Level Expectations, and the 7 Themes of Catholic Social Teaching. Please find below a brief description of each component of the Scope & Sequence and its intended use.

Catholic Social Teaching and Social Studies Standards for K-8
Our Catholic Schools are unique and cater to the specific needs of their diverse learners, therefore no two schools’ curriculum will look exactly the same. However, curriculum standards should be aligned with state standards but considered from the lens of Catholic teachings. In supporting this effort, a team of GRACE teacher leaders have began the process of aligning CST (Catholic Social Teachings) to the standards. This is not an exhaustive or finalized list, but rather a jumping off point: CST – Social Studies Alignment

Finally, in an effort to align standards with classroom teaching, some schools have adopted specific curriculum and textbooks to help guide this work. Here are some examples of what is being used around our Archdiocese. Currently, there is not one *recommended* social studies text, curriculum or literary work but rather, we recommend that social studies teachers continually review their primary and secondary source collections to ensure their curriculum features a wide range of voices, lenses and continually weaves our Catholic faith into the discussion. This is a list that will continue to be updated as we get more information from your schools! Social Studies Curriculum Used in Seattle Archdiocese 2021-22
